In Mystic Messenger by Joe Mantegna, the reader is introduced to a new character, Gabriel. When he boards the airplane with Claire, he mistakenly believes her to be pregnant. This leads him on a wild goose chase throughout Europe and into France, where the couple's love seems to have blossomed.
The premise of the story is simple. We see a man whose love life is on an all-time low. He has recently broken up with his girlfriend and wishes to win her back, but knows that winning her back will mean leaving his comfort zone of New York City. Entering a French castle, where he meets a charming young girl, Claire, whom he instantly falls in love with. Claire is also from France and is half-French. Her father is an alcoholic who leaves her family when she is only ten years old. When her best friend, David, asks her to go to a prestigious art academy with him, Claire agrees, but before she can board the plane, she has an unscheduled meeting with her mother, where she tells her mom about the man she is going to marry. As her plane approaches Paris, she gets a call from her father and goes off to attend the ceremony.

This makes Richard jealous since he wants to be rich like his sister, so he starts trying to win Claire's heart, even going as far as to set up a liaison with her teacher, Jeanette.

When the class is about to take a leave, David and Claire go out to the garden to practice their lines in the sun. Then everything changes. Richard comes to town to see them and insists they tell him why they love each other. Richard then gets jealous of this, so he goes over to his sister's house and starts trying to talk her into getting back with Richard.
